Event Recap — Climate Code
Climate Code 2021 — Vancouver’s largest high school hackathon — hosted by XdHacks Mini took place virtually on August 6–8, 2021. With an aim to inspire more youth to be engaged with the field of STEAM (Science, Technology, Art and Mathematics), Climate Code 2021 brought more than 250 high school students (50% of them being beginner hackers) from around the world together for a weekend of problem solving.
This jam-packed weekend included numerous technological and career/college readiness workshops and featured six special guests, including guests from the BC Government, Riot Games, Microsoft, and the Society of Women Engineers at UC Berkeley. All ceremonies and workshops have been recorded and posted on XdHacks Mini Vancouver’s YouTube channel, located here.
During the event, 36 teams were formed and winning teams were as follows:
In first place, Aaron Zhou from Team Just Aaron created an application that incentivizes picking up litter at local parks through the use of an innovative real time map system.
In second place, Alex Owusu from Team Alex created an instant text to image based search engine with the ability to provide details regarding a product’s environmental impact by scanning it’s barcode or searching the company name.
In third place Stanley Yi Jie Jin, Aditya Sinha, Marina Jenkins, and Asia Mitchell from Team MASA created Climate Connect, a website used to educate young kids through quizzes and informative videos regarding topics such as climate change.
